Gather Your Supplies

1. Pool Cover

The first step in opening your above ground pool is to remove the pool cover. Carefully remove any debris or leaves from the cover before taking it off. This will prevent any dirt or debris from falling into the pool when you remove the cover.

2. Pool Chemicals

Next, gather all the necessary pool chemicals you will need to balance the water. This includes chlorine, pH increaser or decreaser, alkalinity increaser or decreaser, and pool shock. These chemicals will help maintain the cleanliness and safety of your pool water.

Remove the Winter Plugs and Winterization Equipment

Once you have gathered all your supplies, it’s time to remove the winter plugs and winterization equipment. This includes removing the winter plugs from the return jets and skimmer, as well as removing any winterization plugs from the pool equipment.

Remove the Winter Cover

Now that the winter plugs and equipment have been removed, it’s time to remove the winter cover. Carefully fold and store the cover for future use. Again, be sure to remove any debris or leaves from the cover before storing it.

Clean and Vacuum the Pool

With the winter cover removed, it’s time to clean and vacuum the pool. Use a pool brush to scrub the walls and floor of the pool, removing any dirt or algae that may have accumulated over the winter. Once the pool is scrubbed, use a pool vacuum to remove any remaining debris from the bottom of the pool.

Balance the Water Chemistry

After cleaning the pool, it’s important to balance the water chemistry. Test the pool water using a pool testing kit and adjust the chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels as needed. This will ensure that the water is safe and comfortable for swimming.

Start the Pool Equipment

Once the water chemistry is balanced, it’s time to start up the pool equipment. This includes turning on the filter pump, priming the pump, and checking for any leaks or issues. Allow the pump to run for several hours to circulate and filter the water.

By following these steps, you can successfully open your above ground pool and enjoy a clean and refreshing swimming experience all summer long.
